agape, in the New Testament, the fatherly love of God for humans, as well as the human reciprocal love for God. In Scripture, the transcendent agape love is the highest form of love and is contrasted with eros, or erotic love, and philia, or brotherly love.

Ancient Greeks used several words to describe different forms of love; originally, agape referred to familial or spousal affection without a romantic or sexual connotation. It was contrasted with eros, a term for sexual passion, and philia, a term for a strong friendship.

Agapē is the sacrificial, unconditional love of God. In the New Testament, agapē is the highest form of love. But outside of the New Testament, the word was rarely used.
